Sangati Extended Care Centre (Sangati) was founded in June 2003 by World Vision International – Nepal and in collaboration with St. Xavier’s Social Service Centre. It started as a small Drop-In Centre giving day care services such as acupuncture, counselling, education and referral services for current drug users. Over the last five years the organisation has moved through many transitions and evolved into an independent Non-Government Organisation (NGO). Sangati’s services have grown to include community education and awareness campaigns, a residential drug and alcohol treatment centre and a mid-way home – a base for its reintegration services.
Formally registering with Chief District Office, Ministry of Home Affairs as a local NGO, in affiliation with the Social Welfare Council in 2064 (July 2007 A.D.), Sangati has grown into a distinct entity, changing from a World Vision inspired project and moving apart from the respected founder of drug and alcohol treatment in Nepal, St. Xavier’s Social Service Centre. As such Sangati has faced the challenge of moving from close, supportive partnerships to forging its own identity and making a firm place within the ever expanding HIV and drug related field. Since its registration Sangati has been working through a period of institutional strengthening and internal process consolidation.
